By Douglas Bower One thing, of many things actually, that you find happily lacking in the Mexican press is the reporting of silly and insane lawsuits. Unlike in the United States, where people will sue each another for just about anything, it doesn’t seem to occur (thank God) in Mexico. “He looked at me the wrong way and offended me. I want 10 million dollars for pain and suffering, thank you very much.” I don’t know if it is that Mexico has its head screwed on correctly when it comes to tort laws or what, but you just don’t see people suing over the most idiotic things here. Here are just a few examples[1] of the extremes Americans are allowed to get by with: Two surfers went to court after one allegedly stole the other surfer’s wave. The case was dismissed after court officials found it impossible to put a monetary value on the wave. (Can you believe the courts even attempted to try this case?) A California woman sued a grocery store after she dropped a six-pack of beer on her feet. The woman was not injured, but she said that it hurt. She won the lawsuit. (Amount undisclosed.) A man sued the city of San Diego for $5.4 million after he suffered emotional trauma at an Elton John concert in Municipal Stadium. The man says that a woman was using the men’s urinal, a sight that he claims he found extremely upsetting. (Was this guy for real?) Jerry Williams sued and won $14,500 plus medical expenses after his neighbor’s beagle bit him on the buttocks. The dog was on a chain in a fenced-in yard. Williams had been shooting the dog repeatedly with a pellet gun at the time of the incident. (Hurray for the dog!) Carl Truman, 19, won $74,000 and medical expenses after he sued the neighbor who ran over his hand. His neighbor claimed that he did not realize Truman was stealing his hubcaps at the time. (Someone should sue the jurors who awarded a thief one red cent!) Now, pardon me while I make a few comments on these wonderfully litigious patriots: The surfer should have been slapped soundly and sent on his way. Is that insane or what? What was this guy on? The beer-dropping California woman should have been committed to the Betty Ford Clinic. The man who freaked out at an Elton John Concert over a woman going pee-pee should be told to get a life and stop being a big baby. The buttock-bitten man got what he deserved and the dog should be awarded the $14,500 dollars for biting the madman in the buttocks. The hubcap-stealing gomer who got his hand run over should have to serve time and then pay the $74,000 to the neighbor from whom he was stealing. Here is the best one of all. John Jenkins, 53, a methane power plant operator with North West Fuels Development Inc.an expert, mind yougoes into a port-a-potty to do his business, lights up a cigarette, and gets his butt blown out the door. You would think this guy, an expert in this field, would have known better than to light a cig around pipes and port-a-potties full of methane gas. What was he thinking! He wasn’t. In addition, for his carelessness, he got himself blown out the door of the toilet with his britches down around his ankles. He lived. Consequently, he is suing for $10 million dollars in damages[2] He will probably win. I heard of a potential lawsuit case from a friend who worked in a particular restaurant. A woman diner complained that her fried rice was cold. My waitress friend brought it back, told the cook, who promptly dropped his drawers (I swear this is true!) and sat his naked butt on the rice to warm it up. The customer never knew about it. As fewer people take cash-out refinances, consumer spending growth is expected to slow to an average annual rate of 3.2% for 2006, according to a recent Bloomberg News survey. Homebuilders are calling on Federal Reserve policy makers to end the series of increases in interest rates that began in June 2004. There have been 16 consecutive raises so far, with a 17th expected at the end of the month. “This is the time for the Fed to pause on rate hikes because we hae some interest-sensitive housing markets that have become vulnerable,” said David Lereah, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors. While the NAR expects housing sales to drop by 6.8% for 2006, it still believes that it will remain the third-strongest year on record for sales. Aside from being so rewarding, it can be very fun and highly creative if you decide to do-it-yourself. I highly recommend that you read up, because there is a great deal that you must decide before you begin. There are many different ways to learn how to build a fish garden pond. If youre doing this yourself its no walk in the park. However, having someone else do it for you takes out all the fun and creativity. So dont let the hard work ahead stop you, because once you complete your fish garden pond it will be something you treasure forever. First thing is deciding the placement of the garden pond. This is entirely your opinion; some things to consider might be the layout of the land and shade surrounding the pond. How big do you want your garden pond? If youre putting fish in the pond, especially Koi, you will need to make the pond as big as possible and deep enough that it doesnt freeze completely. With a deep of only 30 inches or less you should give the fish and plants a constant temperate (required for survival lot of aquatic life) and keep the pond from freezing in the winter. If you cannot regulate the temperature of your water then you should make your pond at least 48 inches deep. With a shallower depth you also promote algae growth. So consider these factors, when picking the location. Next you will decide the layout of your fish garden pond. This is where you can be highly creative and design whatever shape fits your landscape and your personality. You can use a rope or garden hose to preview the shape. Some things to decide on might be stepping stones or a bridge across your pond and maybe a waterfall on the side or a fountain in the middle. You can get books about fish garden ponds to give you ideas. After deciding what you want it would be best to purchase these things before you start the process, they can be extremely difficult to add later. All these decisions and you might be thinking you havent even done anything yet. It is very important to do these steps in order. A garden pond can cause a lot of problems and can be a very expensive mistake if not planned properly. With that said, now its time to get to work. First you will start digging your hole. Follow your pattern and check your depth. You might want to consider different depths to add a neat effect, and also for plants that need different depths. Next you need to purchase a pond liner. There are many things that you can use for lining the pond and they are a lot cheaper than a standard garden pond liner. For example if you purchase a thick enough sheet of painters plastic or double it up it will work just fine. Lay this in the hole and anchor it along the sides with a border of your choosing. Now youre ready for water. Make sure everything is exactly how you want it and start to fill it up. Also make sure youre plastic is anchored well; you might even want to bury the excess for added support. Fill the water to the desired amount and youre almost there! Now you can decide on how to beautify your ponds edges with rocks, plants, waterfalls, whatever you heart desires. Now that you have the foundation laid you can experiment with the surround landscape for years. The last thing you will do, and be patient, is add fish. You need to make sure the water has acclimated and is safe for the fish. You can purchase easy to use water tests at local pet stores. Do your research before deciding on which fish to put into your pond. Many fish are only tolerant in certain temperatures and cannot make it year round in a garden pond. Also, different kinds of fish grow to different sizes. So make sure that they are mated with similar sized fish so they dont become fish food! Dont worry though because there is a wide variety of beautiful fish for your pond. Soon enough youll be picking them out and watching them grow while you enjoy the experience of your beautiful fish garden pond.
